Shanti Sadan
Shanti Sadan is a part of the Vanaprastha Ashram initiative, which also manages homes for elders at Bharathi Seva Sadan in Sringeri. The concept is deeply rooted in the traditional Ashrama system of Hindu Dharma, Brahmacharya, Gruhastha, Vanaprastha, and Sanyasa representing the four essential stages of life.
Built on the philosophy of offering “more than a home,” Shanti Sadan provides an environment where senior citizens can live together with harmony. The purpose is to create a space filled with solitude, peace, and companionship, especially for elders who may not have family support due to the growing trend of nuclear families and the migration of younger generations in pursuit of careers.
The founder, Late Shri Narayanan Hariharan Iyer, established the Sringeri home around 25 years ago with the blessings of the Mahasannidhanam of Sharadha Peetam, Pujya Shri Bharathi Teertha Swamigal, who performed the Bhoomi Poojan and inaugurated the first Ashram in Sringeri. The success of that initiative led to the creation of Shanti Sadan, which was established in 2012 on the Hoskote–Malur Road, approximately 36 kilometres from Bangalore City. The home was officially inaugurated on August 19, 2012, by Chairman G.K. Ramamuthy with the blessings of the Shankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt.
Situated on the outskirts of Jagidenahalli, a location known for archaeological discoveries, Shanti Sadan enjoys a calm and serene environment surrounded by natural vegetation, making it ideal for the elderly. It is about 9 km from Malur Junction, 10 km from Kolar, and around 40 km from Bangalore airport and railway station. Spread across 1.5 acres of land, the campus has been designed with mini-apartment structures ranging from 400 to 700 square feet. It includes a common dining hall, a Ganesha temple, and provisions for clean drinking water. The entire project is built on the principles of Karma Yoga, with a scope for future expansion.
The climate of the region is mild and sub-tropical, with average temperatures ranging between 26°C in winter and 34°C in summer. Some of the nearby attractions include the Saptamata Temple, Kaikondrahalli Lake, and the Jadigenahalli Archaeological Park. Visitors are also allowed to stay on the campus upon request, as the Ashram provides visitor accommodation facilities. In comparison to other paid old-age homes across India, Shanti Sadan’s charges are described as very reasonable, making it an affordable yet peaceful retreat for senior citizens.
Amenities
Shanti Sadan provides its residents with a range of essential amenities to ensure comfort, safety, and convenience. There is a 24×7 water supply with solar heaters, and a borewell connected to RO filters ensures pure drinking water. The water is regularly tested for quality, and boiled, cooled water is available to all residents. Nutritious vegetarian meals are provided daily, and residents also benefit from maintenance and washing facilities. The ashram ensures round-the-clock electricity and has plans to introduce solar panels for sustainable energy. Weekly trips to nearby temples and markets are also organized for residents.
Health and well-being are given great importance at Shanti Sadan. Regular health checkups are conducted, and qualified doctors visit fortnightly to examine and advise residents. The community dining hall provides a space for all residents to dine together, promoting interaction and a sense of belonging. The Ganesha temple within the campus allows residents to participate in prayers and spiritual activities, while a common meeting area serves as a hub for both social and spiritual interaction.
For visiting family members and friends, Shanti Sadan provides a guest house within the campus. Visitor accommodations can be arranged upon request, allowing families to stay close to their loved ones. The home’s location, surrounded by greenery and away from city noise, enhances the overall peaceful experience, offering residents a serene, natural environment to live in harmony and spiritual contentment.
