“At what point does aging stop being something that happens to us, and start being something we truly own?”
It’s a question that stays in your chest long after you hear it. Because growing old isn’t just about time passing it’s about how we choose to carry that time.
In a city like Mumbai, where life moves fast and space is always tight, many elderly people find themselves standing at a quiet crossroad. Some live with family, some alone. And some move into places called old age homes not out of weakness, but sometimes out of strength. Out of the desire to live the later chapters of life with care, and companionship.
Old age homes in Mumbai are not just buildings with beds. They are places where stories live. Where a retired teacher shares poems with a nurse. Where a man, who once worked on Mumbai’s local trains, now watches the same trains go by from his window.

Param Shantidham
Moved by the growing hardships faced by destitute elderly individuals, Vairatvasi Abanand Maharaj established Paramshanti Dham Vriddhashram on 15th March 1988. The ashram was created as a lifelong refuge for abandoned and orphaned senior citizens, offering not just shelter, but stability, care, and spiritual calm during their later years.
From the very beginning, the ashram has remained committed to inclusivity, welcoming elders without distinction of religion or caste, and providing care to both men and women above the age of sixty for the rest of their lives.
History & Growth
The Vriddhashram began its journey in 1988 with just four elderly residents, living in a simple hut. As the need for elder shelter grew, the organisation was formally registered as a Trust on 19th September 1990.
Today, Paramshanti Dham stands as a well-established residential ashram with a reinforced concrete structure comprising a ground floor and two upper floors. The facility includes 35 residential rooms, each supported by toilets and bathrooms, along with three large halls used for daily prayers, cultural activities, religious festivals, and community gatherings.
Over the years, the ashram has provided lifelong shelter to over 1,000 elders, and currently cares for 70 residents.
Facilities Inside the Ashram
The ground floor houses essential functional spaces including an office, kitchen, dining hall, two doctor OPD rooms, a library, storage facilities, and staff rooms. The layout is designed to support both daily living and healthcare needs while maintaining a calm, organised environment.
Daily Life & Routine
Life at Paramshanti Dham follows a structured yet peaceful daily routine that supports discipline, spiritual balance, and wellbeing.
Residents begin their day early, with morning tea followed by prayer sessions, breakfast, afternoon prayers, lunch, rest periods, evening tea, fresh-air walks, evening prayers, dinner, and rest. This consistent rhythm helps residents feel secure, purposeful, and emotionally grounded.
Atmosphere & Activities
Set away from the city, the ashram is surrounded by fresh air and natural calm, creating a healthy and spiritually uplifting environment. Alongside daily prayers, residents participate in a variety of social, religious, medical, and entertainment programmes.
Community organisations such as Mahila Mandals, Lions and Lioness Clubs, Rotary Clubs, corporate groups, and NGOs regularly visit the ashram to conduct activities including games, music sessions, bhajans, yoga, and celebrations, bringing warmth and interaction into daily life.
Medical Care & Support
Medical care is an integral part of life at the ashram. Doctors visit the premises three times a week for routine check-ups and medication distribution. In case of serious illness, residents are promptly admitted to nearby hospitals.
