Krishna Sadan

Krishna Sadan is a charitable organisation run by professional social workers in Hyderabad, India. It is dedicated to supporting elderly individuals who lack family support or financial means. As a free old age home, it offers both short-stay and long-stay options to elders who are abandoned or face difficulties at home. No charges are levied on any resident, and elders from all castes and religious backgrounds are welcome. The vision of Krishna Sadan is to help elders age with dignity enjoying family support, economic stability, good health, and social solidarity. Its mission is to provide institutional care for needy elders, offer counselling services for both elders and caretakers, and run referral services, advocacy, lobbying, and research in ageing. The organisation is also engaged in capacity-building programs and raising support for improved living conditions for elders globally.

Amenities
Over the years, Krishna Sadan has helped elders and families cope with adjustment difficulties and even reunite. It provides both transit (short-stay) and permanent home facilities for the elderly. The organisation has also conducted several awareness programs in schools, colleges, and among youth to spread the importance of caring for the elderly. Regular health check-ups are organised for residents, and those requiring further treatment are referred to nearby corporate hospitals. Counselling services are available for both elders and caretakers facing difficulties, offered by appointment. Spiritual well-being is also emphasised with the establishment of a Sri Krishna Temple and Meditation Annex within the premises, inaugurated on February 1, 2017. Residents are provided nutritious meals designed by a dietitian, based on the National Institute of Nutrition’s dietary guidelines. The daily food schedule includes tea or coffee with biscuits in the morning, balanced meals with rice, curry, dal, and curds, an afternoon tiffin with items like idly or dosa, evening tea or malt with biscuits, and dinner featuring curry, rasam, buttermilk, chapati, and rice. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are also included. Krishna Sadan is located on 2.5 acres of land surrounded by trees. About 1.2 acres are cultivated for vegetables, fruits, and paddy for the ashram’s use. Alongside, the Goshala Project (cow shelter) was initiated, with a bhoomi pooja conducted on October 23, 2015. The goshala supports the dairy needs of the residents and produces vermicompost for organic farming. At present, the ashram houses six cows and one bull, with plans for expansion. Sponsorship options are available for individuals to support the cows or overall expenses. Other facilities include regular events and poojas. Every Pournami, a Satyanarayana Pooja is performed, open to all free of cost, including lunch. Families can also celebrate personal occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries at the ashram.

Accommodation
Krishna Sadan offers both long-term and transit accommodations for elderly individuals who may lack caretakers, seek peace, face financial issues, or feel isolated. It is not a beggars’ home but a space for dignified living. The accommodation is provided in dormitory-style arrangements, with separate dorms for male and female residents, and has the capacity to host up to 30 elders. While couples are accommodated, they may need to adjust to staying in separate dormitories. Krishna Sadan is planning to establish a 50-bedded assisted living facility specifically for elders suffering from Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other age-related illnesses. This initiative will expand the organisation’s capacity to serve elders with specialised healthcare and living arrangements. A single room with basic amenities costs around Rs. 8,000 per month whereas the cost can also vary depending on the duration of stay. For a long-term stay, monthly fees can range from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 12,000.
