Sukoon Nilaya

Sukoon Nilaya, meaning is a peaceful care facility located on a 7-acre serene property in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. It was established during the COVID-19 pandemic with the specific goal of offering specialized palliative care, particularly for non-cancer patients in the final stages of life.  The focus at Sukoon Nilaya is on symptom relief, stress reduction, and enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families. The facility accepts referred patients only, regardless of income level. Care is offered at any age or stage of illness, and can continue alongside ongoing curative treatments. Importantly, each patient is required to be accompanied by a caregiver or attendant throughout their stay.

Amenities

Sukoon Nilaya provides a comprehensive suite of medical and clinical services. Its Outpatient Department (OPD) manages symptoms and pain, while the Inpatient Department (IPD) caters to patients requiring more intensive support, including caregiver training. All patients receive free medicines and assistive devices. The multidisciplinary medical team includes doctors who provide compassionate care, nurses who manage medications and train caregivers in daily care needs like feeding and wound management, and therapists such as occupational and speech therapists who help patients regain physical and cognitive abilities. A medical social worker supports families on a social, economic, and spiritual level, while clinical psychologists and counselors offer essential emotional support to both patients and caregivers, helping them manage grief, stress, and burnout. Therapeutic care at Sukoon Nilaya begins with an individualized needs assessment. Therapy programs are tailored based on the patient’s age, health condition, and emotional needs. Options include music therapy, cognitive therapy, individual counseling, and art therapy. These services are designed to enhance emotional resilience, support the psychological well-being of both patients and caregivers, and prevent caregiver fatigue by promoting a balanced approach to care. To ensure mental stimulation and emotional engagement, patients have access to various recreational options such as games, newspapers, and tablets, fostering a more homely and relaxed environment. Even after discharge, Sukoon Nilaya continues to offer support through home care services, teleconsultations, and liaison with the treating physician to maintain continuity of care. Counseling sessions and assistive devices are provided as needed to ease the transition from facility to home.

Accommodation

Sukoon Nilaya houses a 23-bed ward equipped to provide intensive and holistic palliative care. The environment is designed to be safe, clean, and well-equipped, balancing medical needs with caregiver availability. A key feature of the facility is its focus on caregiver training, ensuring families are well-prepared to manage care after discharge. The physical space includes specially designed toilets to support patients using walkers or wheelchairs, enabling easier access for bathing and toileting.
